The elephant unshackled!! Quite a Royal Tale...

Ahmedabad was painted blue on 9th August 2018, when the regal heirlooms showcased their priced heritage in a fresh format.

HH Maharani Radhika Gaekwad and Mallika Sarabhai

The unveiling of Royal Fables at The Hyatt, Vastrapur narrated, yet another chapter, singing sonnets of the glory and magnanimity associated with our rich heritage culture. The Elephant sculpture symbolising strength, vigor, valor, power and richness was the theme of Royal Fables. The giant, who had been in captivity for long, not realising its own potential got unshackled. The broken shackles were very much part of the sculpture!!

Her Highness Maharani Radhika Raje Gaekwad of Baroda & Mallika Sarabhai did the ceremonial opening of the fable; followed by the thematic dance of Mallika Sarabhai revolving around elephants... She spoke about ‘gaja gamini’ – the woman with elephant walk used to be considered sexiest, she also narrated the story of ‘Agastya’ through her traditional dance. The most phenomenal performance was creating a Blue elephant by indigo ink via dance moves on a fresh canvas.. truly eye-catching, leaving you astounded and completely awestruck.

Elephant painted on a life-sized canvas through dance moves in just few minutes!!

The elephant as we all know; has been the most essential part of royal tales. It is also the head of Lord Ganesha, who is considered as most auspicious of all deities. The white elephants are always behind “Goddess Lakshmi”. A white elephant is considered to be the most exceptional and expensive animal to keep.

Uday Mahurkar, a renowned author and a media stalwart too addressed the opening session of the Royal Fables, saying, “In 1950 more than fifty percent of land belonged to Royal families. They had the experience of better administration instilled with the value system, so essentially out of the two great rulers; Sayaji Rao Gaekwad of Baroda and Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner, had one of them been elected as the President of India, our journey travelled post-independence would have been completely different.”

The imperial extravaganza christened as Royal Fables; comprised all facets of heritage and art was showcased at The Hyatt, Vastrapur. Call it a sculpture, vivid dance formats, studded jewelry, intricate paintings, the woven spellbinding Benarsis, poetic patolas, rich zardozi, contemporary designer outfits or the preserved culinary art of various royal gharanas.. all were in a perfect blend and lyrical ensemble. Crème de la Crème of Ahmedabad along with patrons of Royal Fables and founder member Anshu Khanna were present at the venue.

At another level, running parallel were cooking workshops where I glanced through “Soya korma” prepared through direction, by Nawab of Rampur.
Well.. that's besan ka achar!!
So the scenario at Hyatt was that of a real fairy tale; not that of an endpoint of an elephant but the beginning of an inspirational regal journey, revival or heritage...

Upcycle Concrete

Upcycle is an interesting "GREEN" practice nowadays followed by many!! For goods and commodities its good, but in the era of shifting sands, preferences, fast evolutionary changes, the need and demand for more excitement the malls, unlike old markets, have a very short life span. A decade is quite long, then they slowly organically fade out. Ahmedabad, unlike the metros is quick silver. The life span of malls is shorter than those in metros.. few which have swept off infront of our eyes in two decades are; Gulmohar, Fun Republic, Gallops etc. Gallops though with best brands, infrastructure couldn't survive the cost concious market. Two days ago I happened to step into Iscon mega Mall, Mega like the word suggests, its gigantic. Reliance hyper market was inaugurated on 15th August 2006 by Sh Mukesh Ambani, it was his big bang entry into retail segment. In this mega structure, today hardly 10% area is functional, rest is all unused.  If Westside and Reliance are functional...

Parallel Worlds - Perspectives from Gwalior

India is a land of Gold mine for Archeologists and architects.. any region we travel, there are ballads and narratives found in every corner of the country. After various emperors who travelled and did their territory demarcation.. today the politically divided States as per the Sovereign Social Republic clearly reflect the culture and Unity in Diversity in various aspects, be it culture, space, region, food or architecture. Madhya Pradesh, today being the centre of the country is a classic example where you can find historical structures, monuments and living spaces from across eras. Mughal, Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs, Britishers etc.  Apart from this, there is a lot of correlation found in the architecture of structures found in other states which have been built in other eras. Twin temples with elephant carvings as base Sas Bahu Temple Gwalior (vishnu temple) Sun Temple Modhera in Gujarat and Sas Bahu (as ...
