It’s Raining chocolates and cakes this Rakhi..

Well!! Food is one element which binds us together...! But, coming to one of the most important Indian festival, which is celebrated across the length and breadth of the country is; the bond made by blood, Rakshbandhan!! This bandhan or bond of a brother and sister is a ritual of tying a thread on the wrist of brother by a sister, where sweet is an essence.

Till few years back, Indian sweets used to be an integral part of this fest; but since past few years with the contemporary culture and strong western influences, the GenX needs to play around with festivals as well, hence chocolates, cakes and fusion desserts have overtaken the Indian mithai.

Gulab Jamun Tea cake

Motichoor Cake jars

The fusion versions of Indian mithai have been played around pretty well by Cocoa Drama, located at Vastrapur. Khushali Solanki, the creator of the brand has touched upon the Indian chord with her fusion versions of Gulab Jamun and Jalebi teacakes. The motichoor cake jars have replaced the typical fudge jars, leaving your mouth open in awe!!

Goodies at Indulgence
Reena Kakkar, the creator of Indulgence; she keeps on adding her decades of experience in her novelties. She has created hampers which have the essence of Indian ingredients like basil, chillies and curry leaves. Tomato basil cake, made of cherry tomatoes is one of the exotic cakes; Fresh date and coconut cake too, is made by local ingredients, adding the goodness of nutrition to your indulgence. Apart from this, they have other goodies in beautiful ensemble comprising cinnamon balls, red velvet minis, wheat based, Parmesan cheese chilli pretzels, dry fruit peacons, flavoured cherries, spicy tomato snack or a banoffee cake (loaded with bananas, nutella and coffee).. or anything your heart desires for!

Ecstatic Hamper
The dramatic assortments don’t end here.. Shweta Raval of Chocolat has crafted toppings of flowers in her jars. Shilpa Bhatt of Ecstasy chocolates, is known for her handcrafted unique chocolate bouquets, wrapped with equally ecstatic designer eggless chocolate hampers.
Evergreen Buttercupp
Buttercupp at Vastrapur is famous for their simplicity and freshly made homemade delightful, smooth cakes. They believe in serving the cup cakes in their own original format without playing around and buying expensive packaging. Amar Patel comments, “We can rather give a cup cake extra, than digging a hole in your pocket with pricey fancy packaging.”

Bellezone creations
Bella Shah of Bellezone, has her own assorted collection. Be it rose petals, date rich chocolate or one loaded with pistachios or almonds. She too is quite famous in town and prepares baked fusion versions of Indian mithais.

Swati Rangwani of Chocolate.ism has created personalized nuttella jars, so have that goodie with your name printed!!

Last but not the least, Chai Shop at Hyatt Regency, Ashram Road is one of my favourite outlets for their baked scrumptious colourful array of goodies. I have always been filled delight after feasting myself with their pastries.

Upcycle Concrete

Upcycle is an interesting "GREEN" practice nowadays followed by many!! For goods and commodities its good, but in the era of shifting sands, preferences, fast evolutionary changes, the need and demand for more excitement the malls, unlike old markets, have a very short life span. A decade is quite long, then they slowly organically fade out. Ahmedabad, unlike the metros is quick silver. The life span of malls is shorter than those in metros.. few which have swept off infront of our eyes in two decades are; Gulmohar, Fun Republic, Gallops etc. Gallops though with best brands, infrastructure couldn't survive the cost concious market. Two days ago I happened to step into Iscon mega Mall, Mega like the word suggests, its gigantic. Reliance hyper market was inaugurated on 15th August 2006 by Sh Mukesh Ambani, it was his big bang entry into retail segment. In this mega structure, today hardly 10% area is functional, rest is all unused.  If Westside and Reliance are functional...

Parallel Worlds - Perspectives from Gwalior

India is a land of Gold mine for Archeologists and architects.. any region we travel, there are ballads and narratives found in every corner of the country. After various emperors who travelled and did their territory demarcation.. today the politically divided States as per the Sovereign Social Republic clearly reflect the culture and Unity in Diversity in various aspects, be it culture, space, region, food or architecture. Madhya Pradesh, today being the centre of the country is a classic example where you can find historical structures, monuments and living spaces from across eras. Mughal, Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs, Britishers etc.  Apart from this, there is a lot of correlation found in the architecture of structures found in other states which have been built in other eras. Twin temples with elephant carvings as base Sas Bahu Temple Gwalior (vishnu temple) Sun Temple Modhera in Gujarat and Sas Bahu (as ...
