For goods and commodities its good, but in the era of shifting sands, preferences, fast evolutionary changes, the need and demand for more excitement the malls, unlike old markets, have a very short life span. A decade is quite long, then they slowly organically fade out.
Ahmedabad, unlike the metros is quick silver. The life span of malls is shorter than those in metros.. few which have swept off infront of our eyes in two decades are; Gulmohar, Fun Republic, Gallops etc. Gallops though with best brands, infrastructure couldn't survive the cost concious market.
Two days ago I happened to step into Iscon mega Mall, Mega like the word suggests, its gigantic. Reliance hyper market was inaugurated on 15th August 2006 by Sh Mukesh Ambani, it was his big bang entry into retail segment. In this mega structure, today hardly 10% area is functional, rest is all unused.
If Westside and Reliance are functional, it's not possible that in near future the area can be dismantled or transformed. Hence the grave condition of such concrete structures must be thought of seriously.
They occupy huge spaces in the city where we are adding concrete daily, creating dead zones, why not utilise them than let them fall to wreckage.
🌀Convert the failed Malls to Community centres.
Take permission from AMC.
🌀Children need open spaces and what better place than an empty mall.
🌀We need oxygen, what better place than an empty mall to build nursery.
🌀Hold flea markets or melas
🌀Transform one section to co-working spaces
🌀 Create a bouquet of offerings to utilise it to its best potential.
Till the time they find big buyers or a scheme to launch.
🌀Use the concrete to its best.
All is possible with best of our intention.
Revenue earned can be shared by stakeholders.
Yes, it's a very good thought. Why waste well developed spaces.
