Green Economy - the new Blue print

In a flashing visit of his Excellency H.EPekka Haavisto, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Finland in India, we got a chance to capture some points from his vision to develop the world, especially human capital in amalgamation with the environment. Therefore in a multidimensional meet, with a focus to boost the economy of Africa and how India can be a key contributor or driver for the same, various aspects were discussed.

Africa and Great Power Politics – Views from Europe and India was the topic covered at Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi, India.

We all are aware that India and Africa have pre-colonial connections, apart from genetic and the lions we know of.. we’ve had business connections; and subsequent to the continent split up, trade routes were developed. Africa is rich and endowed with the best natural resources, minerals, space, and sunshine; hence NOW it is time to boost up the long-struggling economy, reviving our age-old connections and building new routes.

What therefore will be the way forward?

“With a GDP rate of 3.7% in 2019, Africa is not consuming what they produce hence their consumption is totally dependent on imports. Besides, Intra African trade its only 16% which adds to their operational costs compared to the average of 55% in ASEAN countries.

Hence a clear logical solution for Indian exporters is to build manufacturing hubs in the continent and have bilateral relations based on four fundamental principles as we do not have any conflict of interests that can build solidarity thus we can enhance, grow and learn from each other. Mc Kinsey reports also project that Africa will be a global manufacturing hub by 2040.”, mentioned H.H.S Viswanathan, a distinguished fellow at ORF.

But the big question in the hour raised was; While we are discussing about reducing the carbon footprint and supporting life as a whole on the planet with less or zero toxic elements and emissions to be released in the environment, is manufacturing and a consumer-driven economy will be the future of the continent?

We got the best solution by his Excellency H.EPekka Haavisto, who has also been an Advisor for the UN (ASG) in the Darfur peace process, and Special Representative to the Minister for Foreign Affairs in African crises. While the Finland government is themselves are fighting on environmental aspects reducing carbon footprint… He gave one of the best future projections, saying; “Finding sustainable solutions,  we must be advocating the best practices which can be part of the blueprint for future growth. Renewable energy, move from gasoline cars to electric cars or reduce cars. Green urbanisation has to be the new way of living which will reduce greenhouse gases, as cities produce the most greenhouse gases. Hence growth has to revolve around innovation towards sustainable solutions which will create green jobs, new technology. Charting towards environmental movement also means effective waste management, recycle more, and that’s the challenge for the new generation.”

Hence with new 10 guiding principles or testaments for India Africa relationship and Europe to Africa railroad map, boundaries are likely to dissolve, human capital will build, growth will be the major agenda and peace will be the major output with better health and education as key ingredients.

The big challenge to address will be sustainable development and growth with zero environmental damage, preserving nature!

The event was held on November 6th, 2019 at ORF New Delhi – India.

Upcycle Concrete

Upcycle is an interesting "GREEN" practice nowadays followed by many!! For goods and commodities its good, but in the era of shifting sands, preferences, fast evolutionary changes, the need and demand for more excitement the malls, unlike old markets, have a very short life span. A decade is quite long, then they slowly organically fade out. Ahmedabad, unlike the metros is quick silver. The life span of malls is shorter than those in metros.. few which have swept off infront of our eyes in two decades are; Gulmohar, Fun Republic, Gallops etc. Gallops though with best brands, infrastructure couldn't survive the cost concious market. Two days ago I happened to step into Iscon mega Mall, Mega like the word suggests, its gigantic. Reliance hyper market was inaugurated on 15th August 2006 by Sh Mukesh Ambani, it was his big bang entry into retail segment. In this mega structure, today hardly 10% area is functional, rest is all unused.  If Westside and Reliance are functional...

Parallel Worlds - Perspectives from Gwalior

India is a land of Gold mine for Archeologists and architects.. any region we travel, there are ballads and narratives found in every corner of the country. After various emperors who travelled and did their territory demarcation.. today the politically divided States as per the Sovereign Social Republic clearly reflect the culture and Unity in Diversity in various aspects, be it culture, space, region, food or architecture. Madhya Pradesh, today being the centre of the country is a classic example where you can find historical structures, monuments and living spaces from across eras. Mughal, Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs, Britishers etc.  Apart from this, there is a lot of correlation found in the architecture of structures found in other states which have been built in other eras. Twin temples with elephant carvings as base Sas Bahu Temple Gwalior (vishnu temple) Sun Temple Modhera in Gujarat and Sas Bahu (as ...
